Eye Makeup Tricks:: The Basics

We all know what sort of eye makeup we like when we see it, but when we attempt or even think about doing it ourselves, we become downright mystified and perplexed by how to do it.
Eye makeup does take a bit of trial and error, some eye makeup remover and a lot of patience, especially if you are somewhat “challenged” when it comes to applying makeup. Below are some easy and basic ways to apply makeup, all of which apply to any and all eye shapes.
How to Prepare your Eyes for Eye Makeup
There is some preparation involved in applying eye makeup. It’s always best to prepare the area of skin you will be applying any sort of makeup to, so when it comes to eye makeup, it is best to apply a very thin layer of either makeup primer or foundation on the eyelids. (Try Please Hold Eye Primer) This will help correct any slight imperfections or discoloration, and you will then have the perfect canvas to work with.
Once the foundation or primer has been applied, set it with translucent powder if you are using a powdered eye shadow. If you are using a cream eyeshadow or pencil on your eyes, skip the powder as the powder will interfere with the application process.
How to Choose the Color
Just how does one choose that perfect eyeshadow color for their face? One of the best tricks to use is to not base the color choice on your eye color, but rather on your hair color. Here is a good general guide to colors that will work with you based on hair color:
Brunettes: Choose mocha shades and rich chocolate browns.
Blondes: Creamy tones and taupes are definitely your colors!
Redheads: Peach, copper and ruddy browns work, as do pinks and lavenders for those who have a cooler skin tone.
Greys: Grey eyeshadow works well with grey hair, as do blues and soft lavenders and purples
How to Apply the Eyeshadow
There are different application strategies that you can consider. Some of these are:
One Shadow: You can cover your entire eyelid with one color. If you plan on doing this for simplicity’s sake, try to opt for a cream eyeshadow rather than a powder eyeshadow. Choose light or medium tones as well and stay away from dark tones (this will only give you a very dramatic or even vampish look). Add a layer of mascara and line your eyes with a brown eyeliner and you’re good to go!
Emphasizing the Crease: This is perhaps the most popular form of applying eyeshadow to your eye area. To do this, you will start by choosing the lightest color that you have first. Apply the light color all over your entire eyelid. Now take the darker shade. Take your eyeshadow brush and hold it right to the corner of your eye, right where your lash line begins and slightly above your crease (right at the brow bone). The brush will naturally glide up and stop right where you will want the color to end.

How to apply eye shadow {basics}

Eyeshadow, contrary to popular belief, can be tricky to apply to last. With the right techniques and tools, eyeshadow can be applied at 7 in the morning and last until 7 in the evening, or even longer.
1. Prime your lids with Please Hold Eye Primer. This step will help keep your eyeshadow vibrant on your eyelid, not dull on your cheeks as the day goes on. Apply your primer with either a makeup sponge or clean fingers. Blend it in from your lash line into your brow bone.
2. Apply a neutral color first, such as peach, beige, or light brown. Apply to lid.
3. Apply a slightly darker color to the crease. Keep it on your crease, and don't extend it upward. For a more bold look, use bolder colors. Make sure the colors go well with your eye color.
4. Apply your other eye makeup. Take care not to get mascara or eyeliner on your eyeshadow. If this does happen, a dry cotton swab on the spot and gently twisted should remove the makeup with minimal smudging.

1. Prime your eyelids as previously mentioned.
2. Rub your fingertip or a makeup sponge in the cream shadow. Gently dab the cream onto your eyelid, and blend it evenly. Avoid having deposits of color all over your lid by using the pad of your ring finger to gently dispense the color evenly.
3. Dust a translucent poweder or matching eye shadow color on top. This sets the cream to prevent it from sliding off your eyelids. Using a larger, looser brush than a regular eyeshadow brush will prevent color 'deposits' by evenly dusting the powder across the lids.

The Beauty Benefits Of Olive Oil

We often tend to forget that what we buy at the grocery store each week are ingredients that are in many of our beauty products that we have tucked away in our washroom. We also tend to forget that these food items are often more natural and perhaps even better than the chemical-based beauty products that we use every day. Extra virgin olive oil is one of these products that can be found in almost every single kitchen across the country, yet we fail to use it as a beauty treatment.
Olive oil contains a host of important vitamins and minerals that help promote healthy skin, such as vitamin E which helps hydrate the skin and antioxidants that help keep our skin youthful and dewy. Extra virgin olive oil has a number of uses, such as:
A Makeup Remover
Hard to believe that olive oil can remove your makeup, isn’t it? Well, it can! Take out a cotton swab and hold it over the mouth of the bottle. Tip the bottle just to get enough olive oil on the surface of the cotton swab, and then sweep the swab over your face. You will need to work a bit at the mascara and eye liner, but it will come off eventually. The olive oil is a great conditioner for eyelashes, so you will actually be moisturizing and improving the health of your eyelashes by using this as an eye makeup remover.
TIP: You can choose to keep the oil on your face after you have wiped off your makeup, but you can follow up with your every-day cleansing foam. You will notice that your skin will feel softer and more hydrated than ever.
A Hair Conditioner
Our hair loves olive oil! There are a couple of different ways in which you can use olive oil on your hair. The first way is to use the oil as a hot oil treatment. Simple put a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in a plastic baggy and then seal the baggy shut. Place the baggy in a pot of water and bring the water to a boil. The oil should be sufficiently heated at that point. Put on some gloves, and then apply the hot oil to your hair and scalp. Tuck your hair up under a shower cap and leave the olive oil on for 5-10 minutes. Once finished, rinse it out and follow up with a quick shampoo. Do this weekly and you will certainly notice a difference in your hair.
TIP: Women who color their hair report that their hair color isn’t stripped away by hot olive oil treatments, unlike some of the commercial hot oil treatments.
After you shampoo your hair in the shower every day, you can also rub a tablespoon or two of olive oil into your hair. You will need to rinse your hair out well after this treatment and remember that in the case of olive oil, less is more. Use a small amount at a time until you have covered your entire head and do not add any more, otherwise you risk having very greasy looking hair.

BEAUTY TIP TUESDAY::: Why Should I Use Eyeshadow Primer?

Eyeshadow primer is particularly handy if you live in any warm and humid climates, or any days when it’s raining outside. Just a bit of humidity or sweat can cause your eyeshadow to move around and crease in the least flattering of places (like gathering all up in your crease) or it can even begin running down your face if you are in a humid enough climate!
Primer is also great for anyone who is wearing dark eyeshadow, like a smoky eyeshadow color. When lighter eyeshadows crease and move it is far less noticeable than when a black or charcoal colored eyeshadow creases or begins to drip. If you are planning a night out on the town and may be hitting a club (it’s pretty darn hot in those places!) then seriously consider applying an eyeshadow primer to your eyelids prior to eyeshadow application.
When do I Apply an Eyeshadow Primer?
A primer for the entire face or even just your eye area is generally applied after you have cleansed, toned, and moisturized your skin. It is not recommended that you apply a primer after any sort of makeup product has been added, such as concealer or a foundation, as this may cause those products to wipe off.

How to Make Your Face Look Thinner

This requires no fad diets or major weight loss. With a bit of special know-how, you can make your face look thinner in under 5 minutes. How? With make up! Make up will go a long way in giving your face that thinner, leaner appearance and no one will even be wise to your tricks.
Start off by first putting your facial make up on your face, like your concealer, your foundation and your blush. If you don’t have the powder on prior to applying these contouring make up tricks, then your face may appear blotchy and messy.
The first thing that you will need to help give your face a leaner appearance is to choose an appropriate bronzer, or a brown-based blush. For those with a darker complexion, bronzer is probably suitable, but for women with a fairer complexion it may do you best to work with a brown-based blush color as a bronzer can appear a bit too strong and obvious.
Take a dome-shaped blush brush and dust it across the blush or bronzer. Take the brush and sweep it right under the cheekbones. Then, move along to the rim of your face by the hairline, and bring it right across to the center of your face. This will help bring attention to the center of your face and the darker contouring around the edges will detract both light and attention to the roundness of your face.
If you also want to have thinner or leaner lips, this can easily be accomplished with a little bit of lip liner and your lip stick. The fastest way to give yourself a leaner lip look is to take your pencil and to trace the shape of your lips along the inside of your lip line rather than directly on the lip line. Fill your lips in with your lipstick and you’re good to go.
Alternatively, if you would like to help draw a bit more attention to your mouth and away from your actual face, draw the line around the outside of your lips rather than on the lip line itself. Take a lip brush and fill your lips in with lipstick, and cover your lips with a lip sealant. This will give your lips a fuller, sexier pout.
Blush and shimmer also go a long way in keeping your face looking more lean. Dusting your blush right along the apples of your cheeks and drawing it up to your cheekbones will give your face more definition. Using shimmer will help attract light to certain areas you would like to give more attention to, like on the tops of your cheek bones, your temples, and below your eyebrows.
Another way that women swear makes their faces look leaner is to not ever use a center part in their hair. Having a side part or any sort of variation of part will help trim down the size of your face. Also having bangs or layers that lie around the cheek bone as well as the jaw line can help create some extra dimensions and definition to your face that otherwise would be missed by anyone looking at your face.

How to Choose The Right Eye Shadow

Eyeshadow may very well be the most important piece of makeup that you apply to your face. Eyeshadow adds depths to your eyes. Eyeshadows can completely change the shape and dimensions of your eye. Most importantly, eyeshadows are fun! If you are new to the world of makeup or want to change up your makeup routine, finding eye makeup that will work both with you and for you can be a bit difficult. Not to worry, with some basic guidelines you will know how to pick out the right eyeshadows for your eyes in no time.
Blue Eyes
To really make those blue eyes of yours stand out, test out some gray, violet, purple, taupe and deep blue shades (that’s right, blue eyes can wear blue eye shadow – if applied correctly!). For a more bold and funky statement, go for silver, fuchsia, or turquoise.
TIP: Mixing black eye shadow with a bright blue can create an incredibly beautiful smoky eye look!
Green and Hazel Eyes
Green and hazel eyes often have the same sort of undertones, which allows for both those with these two colors of eyes to often use the same colors of eyeshadows. Some fantastic colors to choose from are apricot shades, plums, apricots, purples, brown shades and deep forest greens. Lime green, light green and lighter color shades are also flattering, and any gold tones or gold shimmers are beautiful (especially if you have golden flecks in your hazel or green eyes!).
Brown Eyes
Those with brown eyes have the luxury of being able to pull off almost any color under the sun. Some of the most flattering shades include beige and champagne shades, coppers, bronze tones, and forest green. To make a more bold statement, go for tangerine, hot pink, lime green and royal blue.
.
Arguably, any charcoal-based colors or navy shades will work for any eye color, but the best way to put it to the best is to use a tester at the makeup boutique. Apply the eyeshadow to the back of your wrist and then hold it up to your eye. Does the color compliment your eye color? Does the color make your eyes “pop”, or does the eyeshadow just make your eyes fade away behind the eyeshadow color? You don’t need to settle on a color that someone else told you would look best; take your time and choose colors that will truly compliment you.
You will find eyeshadows in some different forms. The most common is the powder form, where you can find single, duo, or even trio sets of eyeshadows. These are easiest to apply and allow you to appropriately gage how dark you want the colors to be. Some of the powders can also be transformed into a liquid eyeshadow, or you can purchase liquid eyeshadows in stores. Liquid eyeshadows are great for achieving that deeper, darker look. If you are using bold colors and want to make that bold statement, definitely go for liquid eyeshadow. Just be sure to practice a lot before your big night to be sure you know how to control and apply the liquid eyeshadow right!

BEAUTY TIP TUESDAY::: Quick Fixes to Common Makeup Mistakes

We have all been there: we apply all of our makeup so perfectly, or at least just until that certain point when we ruin it all with one sudden mistake – or is it completely ruined? In most cases, any mistake that we make with our makeup is salvageable and doesn’t require us to completely reapply our makeup. If you have ever made a mistake with your makeup, or if you are concerned that you will one day, then this information will go a long way in helping you with your next potential makeup catastrophe.

Your Eyeshadow is Too Dark
One of the most common errors that we make when we are applying makeup is that we lay the eyeshadow on just a tad too thick. If you think that your eyeshadow is too dark, here are some quick fixes for you:
The eyelid: The best way to try and reduce the appearance of dark eyeshadow on the upper eyelid is to try and blend and blur the eyeshadow that you have applied towards the edges of your eye. A firm, clean blending eyeshadow blush will do the trick best, though you can also use your finger. If your eyeshadow still appears too dark, then take a matte eyeshadow or matte eyeshadow product and use that to help blend in the eyeshadow
The crease: If you feel that your crease is a bit too dark, then take a clean sponge and apply a very, very light covering of foundation over the color. Blend as required.
The brow bone: The best way to help blend in any sort of eyeshadow around the brow bone is to take a brush or a Q-Tip and blend the color up, out and away from your eye.
Your Blush is Too Dark
Too much blush? No problem! The best way to take care of this is to take a loose powder brush and stroke the blush area with that brush. That will take away a lot of the surface blush. If you still need to lessen the appearance of the blush, then applying either a translucent or clear powder with that brush just above the blush will held blend in the blush and make it appear more natural.
Your Foundation is Too Thick
If you have that caked-on appearance, then it means that you have applied too much foundation to your face. The best way to take care of this is to take a make up sponge and to lightly moisten it with water. Then, take the sponge and gently move it in a downward action over the areas that have too much foundation.
TIP: This same process can be used to remove any excessive concealer from your skin.
Your Mascara has Smeared on your Face
No matter how well practiced you may be at applying mascara, there will always be that one day out of 100 where you smear it on your skin. The easiest way to fix this is to treat it right as the wet mascara hits your skin. Take a Q-Tip, wet it slightly, and then remove the mascara by placing the Q-Tip overtop of it and moving it in a clockwise twisting motion. This will remove the makeup in 2 to 3 strokes.

Get the right lip color for your skin tone!

For Fair skin tones:
During the day, medium browns or beige with light pink looks great. At night, rich copper brown or bright pink and subtle berry will look good in addition to wine red. Avoid very bright red colors and hot pink colors because they are too much for light skin tones.

For Medium skin tones:
During the day, earthly browns, and caramel look fantastic. At night stick to dark reds, and rich pink colors. Avoid pale browns cause they look washed out on medium skin tones.

For yellowish skin tones:
Rich brown, chocolate and pink look great during the day. At night rose, dark berry, and reddish brown colors will stand out. Avoid light pinks, they don’t look good on yellow skin. Orange red and bluish pink do not work either. Avoid orange red and pinkish red because they will not look good on darker skin tones.

For Dark skin tones:
Medium pink and sheer beige in addition to light browns look good. Nighttime deep reds, wine reds, berry, and copper are amazing

When is it time for new mascara?

Okay so the general consensus that I have found is change your mascara out every 3-6 months.  Which, to me, seems like quite a wide timespan.  Personally, I lean more towards the 3 month mark.  I have found that if I hang onto my mascara for too long my eyelashes do not seem to be performing at their utmost potential.  We’ve all seen it … the lady with the lumpy clumpy lashes.  The one we all just want to take a eyelash comb to and rake out the cake.  This is a prime example of someone who is due for some new mascara.  Replacing your mascara every 3 months will help avoid problems of it drying out and becoming chunky.  It will also lessen your chance of it developing bacteria that can lead to irritation and even infection.

Offer good until Aug 11th. Shop at ashleyrichards.mymarkstore.com

Here are some signs you need to replace your mascara:
If it becomes clumpy
If it appears flaky and dry
If you notice a change in its color
If you notice it has a funky or rancid smell
If you recently had an eye infection (continuing to use it can lead to further infection and contamination)

If the mascara in the tube has come into contact with water (water contains bacteria)

So just like anything else, if you want to continue to get the best results, you must do your part too.  When you purchase a new mascara it is a good idea to mark it on your calendar.  Mark the day you purchased it as well as 3 months later when you plan on buying a new one.  I like to write the purchase date on a sticker and slap it on the side of my mascara so I know for sure wherever I go how long I have until I need a new one.

Hope this helps you  ladies!  Stay healthy!.
